5 Essential Tips for Planning your 2025 Wedding

Happy New Year!

I know the excitement is building as you plan for your wedding this year, and while it’s all about love, laughter, and unforgettable memories, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get everything just right. As a photographer, my job is to capture those special moments, but I also know how overwhelming the planning process can be. That’s why I want to share my top five tips to help you as you look ahead to your wedding in 2025. These tips are designed to make your day run smoothly, ensure you get the photos you dream of, and help you enjoy the planning process a little more.

1. Book Your Photographer Early (And Schedule Your Engagement Session!)

Let’s start with the most important tip: securing your wedding photographer. Weddings are one of the most popular events of the year, and most photographers often get booked well in advance. If you haven’t already, reach out to photographers whose style you love and set up meetings or consultations.

Booking early also gives you the opportunity to schedule an engagement session. These sessions are a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera, get to know your photographer’s style, and create beautiful images you can use for save-the-dates, invites, or social media posts. Plus, it’s a fun way to enjoy a relaxed, pre-wedding experience before the big day.

2. Consider Your Wedding Timeline with Your Photographer in Mind

When planning your wedding day timeline, be sure to factor in your photographer’s recommendations. A lot of couples underestimate the time needed for the important photo moments: getting ready, first look, family portraits, and bridal party shots. These moments can take longer than you think!

As a photographer, I always encourage couples to allocate at least 30 minutes to an hour for portrait time. Trust me, the more relaxed and unhurried your portraits are, the more beautiful and authentic the photos will be. Also, plan for a little buffer time in case things run behind—weddings are famously unpredictable, so a little extra breathing room is always helpful!

3. Think About Lighting—It’s Key for Stunning Photos

I can’t stress enough how important lighting is when it comes to wedding photography. Natural light is often ideal for portraits and candid shots, so consider how your ceremony and reception venue will work with the time of day and year. A wedding in the summer will have long daylight hours, while winter weddings may have less daylight, so plan your outdoor photos accordingly.

If your ceremony is in the afternoon or early evening, you may be able to sneak out for sunset photos—something magical always happens during golden hour. If your wedding is in the evening, look into your venue’s lighting setup or ask your photographer about additional lighting options to ensure your indoor portraits and reception shots are as stunning as possible. And remember, not all photographers know how to work in low-light situations. This is a very important thing to ask them during your consultation!

4. Personalize Your Day, But Keep Practicality in Mind

It’s your day to shine, and personal touches like custom vows, unique decor, and meaningful details will make your wedding special. But as a photographer, I always remind couples to keep in mind how these details will look in photos. For instance, consider the color palette for your bridal party—clothing and florals that complement each other will make your photos pop.

Also, remember the logistics of your day. If you’ve chosen unique venues or elaborate backdrops for photos, make sure your photographer can work within those spaces. High-contrast lighting, cluttered backgrounds, or dark corners can sometimes make even the most beautiful settings difficult to photograph. Your photographer will always find creative ways to work with what you’ve chosen, but clear communication about your vision is key.

5. Don’t Forget About the Fun—Relax and Enjoy the Process!

Weddings can be stressful, but trust me when I say that the more relaxed and joyful you are, the better your photos will turn out. The best photos come from genuine moments—laughter, little glances, spontaneous touches—so don’t get too caught up in the details or perfection.

Remember, this day is about celebrating your love, not stressing over every little thing. Take moments to pause, soak in the joy, and just enjoy being with each other and your loved ones. You’ll be amazed at how this mindset will result in natural, beautiful photos that truly capture the essence of your relationship.

Planning your wedding is one of the most exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—parts of your journey together. By starting early, thinking about the big picture (and the details), and giving yourself the space to enjoy the process, you’ll create the perfect setting for beautiful memories. I can’t wait to be there to capture the love, laughter, and magic of your 2025 wedding!

If you’re still looking for a photographer or have any questions about your big day, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d love to help you bring your vision to life!

Happy Planning!
